Paradigm Change:4:35 PM PDT, May 4, 2009

While thinking it out loud to the comments of a CEO of a very large Semi Conductor company I though this book's not only the title is unique but it changes the paradigm of Projects. As it does not talk about doing the Project Management based on the old IT metrics but on the metrics of the business value. And the above CEO feels that it has never been done before.

 

I would be interested in your feedback.

In the opinions of one of the CEOs of a very large Semi Conductor company, "Sam, I will get a copy and read it. The title still carries a unique message, tying IT to business performance. These two are hardly ever used in the same sentence. IT is always looked upon as a must have for almost every reason except business performance".

Good luck with the book.

My response to him is not only the title but the book changes the paradigm of Project Management. As it does not talk about doing the Project Management based on the old IT metrics but on the metrics of the business value. And the above CEO feels that it has never been done before.

Upon scrolling down I found on the right hand side 2 books for required reading. At the top was this book by me and the other was "Why customers come back" by John Champy. The fact that this work was compared at the same as John Champy's made me feel very good.

I think the reason this book comes up this high in ranking is because its title is clear for what it can do. However none of the key words I used to search from the domain of execution show up. What I mean are the tags like Software Project Management, Enterprise Project Management, Enterprise Technology etc. Where as the ones from the title page bring this book right at the top.

Advances in India

I was in India from Nov 2005 to Mar 2006. I was helping a client select an ERP+ package, vendor & an implementation partner. I did a key note speech on "Global Outsourcing as a Business Strategy" for the insttute of chartered accountants. I also did a chief guest ship for a charity. Another multi hour lecture was at a regional engineering college of my hoe town Jaipur, Rajasthan.

India was no longer a sweat shop for cheap call center plays or simple minded systems development. Companies were moving towards installing enterprise scale systems to improve productivity. Microsft & Google products were in use by the masses similar to US & the other western countries. I also came in contact with many industrialist of the country & got chance to see first hand which way the technology wind was blowing.

As a result of the above following implications are offered:

1. India will soon be selling sophisticated software products to USA & Europe.

2. It will begin handling mission critical complex systems.

3. Salaries in India will rise so much that the outsourcing & call center business will move to Pakistan & other Central Asian countries.

Risks due to inadequate Back Up Planning
While I was writing the chapter on risk of my book " deliver on promise-----", the subject issue popped in my mind. I need your feedback on it. So please read & send me your message at sbansal@san.rr.com.

If the application is not mission critical, systems do not need to be backed up. However with growing complexity, seldom systems are not mission critical. Though some may be more critical than the others. Therefore, a judicious level of back up must be considered right from the selection & evaluation stages. Financial and Customer facing systems that used to be thought of pretty harmless systems, can bring the entire enterprise to its knees now a days, if the system fails. Where as hard core Process Control systems can not be allowed to go down in the midst of production. Thus depending upon the business processes' criticality back up has got to be considered.

The threat to the risk can be eliminated by considering different levels of back up. Automatic back up with shared resources, analog backup in some applications & manual back up are the modes of back up that can be used. This has to be considered for all elements of the entire system. Thought must also be given to readiness exercises after the go live time, so that operating people do not forget to run the system in the back up modes.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing

Computer Integrated Manufacturing was the great invention of yester years which has morphed into ERP, SCM,MES, PLM, SEM, BI, DW etc. And of course EBiz. All components of CIM are evolving well beyond the imaginations of CIM some 10-15 years ago, with respect to functionality. Even the philosophy of CIM is not lost. Just the word CIM has disappeared. It seems same thing happened to Artificial Intelligence.
